Celebrating GLW's 300th issue

BRISBANE — "Support your alternative media: Celebrating 300 issues" was the theme of a Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly dinner held at the Resistance Centre here on November 29. Around 90 people feasted in the courtyard in front of the centre in the heat of the night, to mark the occasion of seven years of Australia's premier progressive newspaper.

Dennis Bobongie, Murri activist, hailed the role of GLW in campaigning for Aboriginal rights and anti-racism. Coral Wynter, Democratic Socialist candidate for South Brisbane in the upcoming Queensland state election, called for the building of a progressive alternative force in Australian politics, to break the stranglehold of the two-party system, and Resistance activist Lana Halpin spoke of the link between Â鶹´«Ã½ and the struggle for youth rights, now under increasing attack. Music was provided by Jody Betzien, Phil Monsour and the band Relish. The dinner raised some $1200 for the Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly Fighting Fund.
